Small Pieces, Lasting Use: Handcrafted Trays and Coasters

August has a way of feeling both full and fleeting.

The long days are still here, the evenings are still warm, and there is often a little more time for gathering with friends, visiting family, or enjoying a slower meal outside. At the same time, there is that quiet awareness that summer does not last forever. The season begins to shift, routines start to return, and we find ourselves making the most of these late-summer moments while we can.

In the workshop, that feeling often brings our attention back to the smaller pieces we make.

Not every handcrafted object needs to be a large piece of furniture. Some of the most useful items in a home are the ones that are picked up, moved around, set on a table, carried outside, or used without much thought at all. A tray for coffee in the morning. A set of coasters beside cold drinks in the afternoon. A small wood tray on a desk, dresser, side table, or kitchen counter. These are not complicated objects, but they often become part of everyday life in a very natural way.

That is the idea behind many of our handcrafted wooden trays and coasters.

They are small pieces, but they still deserve the same care as larger furniture. The same attention to proportion. The same respect for the material. The same careful sanding, shaping, and finishing. A tray or coaster may be simple in form, but when it is made from solid hardwood and finished by hand, it can bring warmth, usefulness, and quiet character to a space for years.

In late summer especially, these smaller pieces seem to find their place easily.

A solid wood coaster set can sit on a coffee table during a visit with friends. A Canadian maple coaster set can bring a little personality to a cottage weekend, housewarming gift, or casual gathering. A small round walnut tray might hold a favourite cup of coffee, a few chocolates, or a small dessert. A round maple tray can add a lighter, brighter feel to a table setting, nightstand, or kitchen counter.

These pieces are practical, but they are also part of how a home feels.

That matters to us. At T. Weatherhead & Co., we often talk about making pieces that are useful enough for everyday life, but thoughtful enough to be enjoyed for a long time. A handcrafted tray or coaster set fits that idea beautifully. It does not demand attention, but it adds something to the room. It brings in the warmth of natural wood, the variation of real grain, and the feeling of something made with care rather than produced in a rush.

Coasters are a good example of that balance.

At their most basic, coasters protect a surface. They give mugs, glasses, tumblers, and wine glasses a proper place to land. But when made from contrasting hardwoods, each one also becomes a small design detail. Walnut, maple, jatoba, purpleheart, oak, wenge, limba, and other hardwoods each bring their own colour, weight, and grain. No two pieces of wood are exactly alike, so even a simple set of coasters carries a little variation and individuality.

That natural variation is part of the appeal. We do not work with solid wood because it is perfectly uniform. We work with it because it has character.

The same is true of trays.

Our round trays, oval trays, valet trays, and desk trays each serve a slightly different purpose around the home. A round tray feels natural for serving a small treat, holding a cup, or creating a simple display. An oval tray has a longer, more graceful shape that works well for small bites, chocolates, keys, jewellery, office items, or table styling. A valet tray belongs easily on a dresser or entry table, keeping everyday items organized without feeling purely utilitarian.

A tray can be used for serving, but it can also help define a space.

On a coffee table, it gathers small objects together. On a desk, it brings order to pens, clips, or accessories. On a bedside table, it gives a watch, ring, or pair of glasses a proper place to rest. In the kitchen, it can hold coffee, sweets, appetizers, or a small moment of hospitality.

That is one of the things we appreciate most about these pieces. They are flexible. They move with the life of a home.

As with our larger work, the material matters. Solid hardwood has a presence that is difficult to replace. Maple brings a light, clean warmth. Walnut offers depth and richness. Oak feels familiar, strong, and traditional. Mahogany adds a warm, refined tone. Cherry develops beautifully over time. Each wood has its own personality, and each finished piece reflects the grain and colour of the board it came from.

A protective finish is also part of that usefulness.

For trays and coasters, finish is not only about appearance. It helps the piece stand up to regular use while also bringing out the colour and grain of the wood. These are objects meant to be handled. Set on tables. Picked up and moved. Used during morning coffee, evening drinks, quiet weekends, and gatherings with friends and family.

That is why we approach them as lasting household pieces, not disposable accessories.

Everything we make is handcrafted in our small Nova Scotia workshop, one piece and one batch at a time. That scale matters. It allows us to pay attention to the details: the grain direction, the feel of an edge, the balance of a shape, the way a finish settles into the wood. It also means the finished item carries a more personal quality. It was made by hand, in a real workshop, with the hope that it will become part of someone’s home.

August feels like the right month to appreciate these smaller pieces.

They suit the season without being limited to it. They work for summer gatherings, but also for fall routines. They make thoughtful host gifts, housewarming gifts, thank-you gifts, or small pieces for your own home. They are just as useful during a late-summer evening outside as they are beside a warm drink months later.

That lasting usefulness is at the heart of why we make them.

A handcrafted tray or coaster set may be small, but it can still bring a sense of care to everyday moments. A coffee placed on a wooden coaster. A few treats carried out on a tray. A table set before friends arrive. A small corner of the home made a little more organized, a little warmer, and a little more intentional.

Those details are easy to overlook, but they are often the ones that make a home feel lived in and welcoming.
