Introducing Our Oak & Walnut Small Step Stool

There is something especially satisfying about a small piece of furniture that quietly earns its place in the home.

Not every piece needs to be large, dramatic, or centre stage. Some of the most useful things we make are the pieces that live beside a cabinet, tuck neatly into a corner, help with the everyday reach for a top shelf, or simply add a little bit of warmth and craftsmanship to a well-used room.

That was the thinking behind our new Oak & Walnut Small Step Stool, a compact single-step stool handcrafted here in our small Nova Scotia workshop.

Built from solid white oak with a contrasting walnut step, this piece brings together two hardwoods we return to often. Oak offers strength, structure, and a familiar warmth, while walnut adds depth and richness through its darker tones. Together, they create a simple but striking combination—traditional enough to feel timeless, yet clean enough to sit comfortably in a modern home.

At approximately 11 inches high, 15 inches long, and 12 inches deep, this small wooden stool is designed for everyday usefulness. It is compact enough to move easily from room to room, but sturdy enough to feel confident underfoot. The broad walnut step gives it a solid, grounded feel, while the oak frame provides the structure and visual balance.

Like many of the pieces we make, this stool started with a practical purpose. A small step stool is one of those household items that often gets used far more than expected. It may live in the kitchen for reaching upper cabinets, in a bathroom beside a vanity, near an entryway, or tucked beside a bookshelf or pantry. It is the sort of piece that becomes part of a daily routine.

But useful does not have to mean ordinary.

One of the goals with this design was to create an oak and walnut step stool that felt more like a small piece of furniture than a purely utilitarian item. The proportions were kept clean and simple. The edges are gently softened. The joinery and finishing are approached with the same care we bring to larger furniture pieces. The result is a compact stool that serves a purpose, while still feeling considered and refined.

The natural contrast between the oak frame and walnut step is a large part of its character. We do not use dyes or stains to force the colour of the wood. Instead, the finish is chosen to bring out the natural grain, warmth, and variation already present in the hardwood. That means each stool will have its own subtle differences, from the pattern in the walnut step to the tone and grain movement in the oak.

For us, that variation is part of the appeal.

A handmade wooden stool should not feel anonymous. It should carry small signs of the material it came from and the hands that made it. That is one of the reasons we continue to work in small batches. It gives each piece the time and attention it deserves, and it allows the finished item to feel personal rather than mass-produced.

This new stool also fits nicely alongside our larger stool designs. If you are looking for something taller with multiple steps, our Oak & Walnut Step Stool remains a more substantial option. If you are exploring different sizes and styles, you can browse our collection of handcrafted stools to compare what may work best for your space.

The Oak & Walnut Small Step Stool fills a slightly different role. It is lower, simpler, and easier to tuck away. It is ideal for those moments when you only need a little extra height, but still want something that looks beautiful enough to leave out.

It is also a piece that reflects what we enjoy most about woodworking: making everyday objects feel special.

A stool may be practical by nature, but the details matter. The way the walnut step contrasts with the oak. The way the proportions feel balanced. The way the finish catches the grain. The way a simple household object can be made with enough care that it becomes part of the home rather than something to hide away.

That is where the quiet value of handmade work often lives.

This small step stool is made for real use. It is meant to be picked up, moved around, stepped on, and incorporated into daily life. But it is also made with the hope that it will last well beyond the quick convenience of the moment. Like much of our work, it is built with an eye toward longevity—something useful today, and still welcome in the home years from now.

Whether you are looking for a compact oak foot stool, a small walnut and oak step stool for the kitchen, or a handcrafted wooden stool made in Canada, this new piece was designed to offer both function and warmth in a compact form.

We are pleased to add it to the shop, and even more pleased to see another everyday object reimagined through solid wood, careful proportions, and small-batch craftsmanship.
